Camper Makeover on a Budget

Hello Campers!

My name is Kimberly and we are The Dekker Trekkers!

We are a family of five and we've just begun our full-timing adventures in our renovated, 28-foot travel trailer. We found this 2010 Jayco Jayfeather EXP 26p in February and instantly fell in love with how well it worked for our family. With a King-sized bed on a rear slide, twin bunk beds on the opposing end, and a dinette on an additional slide in between, we knew we had found the perfect camper for us.

We tow with a Suburban 1500, so with a GVWR of 6,750lbs, we were well under our tow capacity, which was a huge factor in finding the right camper for us. While the layout was incredibly functional, the drab interior was just not our style at all, so we knew right away that we'd be giving it a makeover as soon as we could! With limited time and an even more limited budget, we were able to completely transform the space without ever changing a thing about the structure of the camper itself.

The first thing we did was remove all the outdated window treatments and coverings. This simple step already made such a huge difference! I could tell right away, with a little paint and creativity, this space was going to be so bright and beautiful and would feel so much like "home" to us. After selecting beautiful, fresh paint colors and new vinyl flooring, we hired a professional to help us by painting the interior and laying the flooring down for us.

Last Summer, we completely remodeled a pop-up camper on our own, so we knew this time around we'd definitely need some help if we were going to have it finished before hitting the road when we had planned to. In no time at all, we had the camper back and were able to start putting in new roller shades, reupholstering the dinette cushions, putting in new hardware on the doors and drawers, and all the other personal touches. Most of the décor came right out of our house and into the camper. Not only did we save a ton of money that way, but it also brought in familiarity for the boys, as we knew this transition might be challenging for them at times. We made a few new purchases such as Beddy’s Beds for the bunk beds, linen towels for the bathroom, and lightweight dishes for the kitchen. These simple purchases make life so much easier living tiny! Also, anytime you can add storage to a camper and still keep it beautiful and open, it’s a total win! So, when we added things like spice racks, wicker baskets, a 4-cube storage shelf, and accordion hooks, it not only created more options for storing things we needed, but also added to the coziness and allowed us to show our own style and personality in it!

It really just goes to show, you don’t have to make huge changes to completely transform a small space like this. Without knocking out cabinets or pulling out big furniture, we were able to open and brighten it up so much! We still have tons of projects planned for this camper, but for now we are just adjusting to our new life, living on the road, and enjoying our cozy little home on wheels.
